Title:
EO BIG DATA ANALYSIS AND INTEGRATION FOR SUPPORTING RISK MITIGATION, ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND PROMOTING SDGS

Abstract:
The availability of the new advanced EO technologies characterized by an increasing growth of both classical and emerging technologies and multidisciplinary methodologies has opened new infinite possibilities, unthinkable only a few years ago especially. We already live in an age of a growing availability of free data and open access software tools that enhance a powerful link between in situ investigations and computer-based analysis thus offering a new opportunity for the exploitation of scientific outcomes. Therefore, the new and emerging challenges are the operational use of EO technologies, data dissemination and interoperability, along with costs, simplicity in use and speed of applications. Earth Observation (EO) technologies can enable advanced performance and new operational applications specifically addressed to security and risk (see, for example Copernicus program and Sentinel missions) also including the monitoring and preservation of heritage sites. Nevertheless, even if the potential of EO technologies for assessing and monitoring natural and man-made disasters is well known, still today the applications of RS data in operational disaster management and monitoring is a difficult task.
To move from scientific to operational applications there are gaps to be filled and needs to be addressed. To improve risk estimation and management based on Remote Sensing data it is particularly important to set up operational approaches and methods for the diverse applications and risks, with protocols and quantitative evaluations of accuracy and reliability.

The lecture will be focused on:

–An Overview on active and passive satellite remote sensing technologies for supporting risk mitigation, environmental monitoring and promoting SDGs (Sustainable developing Goals- UN Agenda 2030)
–Remarkable case studies selected from Europe, Africa, Asia and Southern America

Lecturer: Dr. Rosa Lasaponara

Rosa Lasaponara PhD, is Research Director at National Council Research of Italy, where she leads the Remote Sensing Laboratory for forest fire (since 2008) and the ARGON research group. In the 2017 she founded the Digital Belt and Road International Centre of Excellence (ICoE Potenza) Sino-Italian (CNR – CAS-) working group.
She is adjunct professor of Microwave Teaching at the university of Basilicata, and member of the scientific committee of the PhD “Cities Landscapes: Architecture, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage, History”.

She has more than 25 years of experience in the field Earth Observation from satellite/airborne/ground based on active (radar, lidar) and passive (optical, multi-hyperspectral data) sensors. Her main research interests are focused on modelling, data processing, integration, and interpretation of big Earth Observation for natural/anthropogenic risk estimation and mitigation, with particular reference to fire, landscape archaeological and paleo-environmental studies.
Authored or co-author of more than 350 peer-reviewed papers (120 in JRC journals, book etc), editor of NHESS, academic Editor of RS and guest editor for several international journals Remote Sensing, IJRS, JAG, Ecological Modelling, Journal of Archaeological science, Archaeological Prospection, Journal of Cultural Heritage
She holds several international positions including: chair of EARSeL SIG RS for archaeology (http://www.ibam.cnr.it/earsel/) funded in cooperation with UNESCO, visiting professor at the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Chinese Academy of Sciences(RADI, CAS) – Beijing, Member of the governing Board of HIST –CAS (UNESCO cat.2 centre) Beijing.

She has been and currently is the LPI scientific coordinator of several research projects at national and international level, funded by the EU, ASI, CNR, ESA, DPC, currently the LPI of SER FOR FIRE ERA4CS EU project Integrated services and approaches for Assessing effects of climate change and extreme events for fire and post fire risk prevention http://www.jpi-climate.eu/nl/25223459-SERV_FORFIRE.html.
