1ST ARTSAT WORKSHOP AT INPE
ArtSat - Art of Satellite Laboratory (for art/science lovers).
CubeSat Model
Online, From September 21 to December, 8 2020
ARTSAT (Art of Satellites)
With this course we want to foster new lines of research between Art and Science, to promote technical and scientific knowledge, to connect artists and scientists, to enhance Space Culture in Brazil.
WHAT IS AN ARTSAT?
ArtSat is the Satellite Art abbreviation. It is a satellite created from engineering and art techniques. An example of that? The satellites "Invader" and "Despatch" from the ArtSat program launched by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) in 2014. "Despatch" (Deep Space Amateur Troubadour's challenge) was launched on Hayabusa-2 (asteroid probe) in late 2014, whose challenge was, among other things, to create a means of communication that could be received on many amateur radio stations around the world. The despatch had a spiral artistic design forming a spatial sculpture in addition to producing poems through algorithms, using data from various sensors installed in its payload, to transmit them through CW beacons. Its mission was to be able to transmit the poems remotely in deep space, of course, this was also a communication challenge since the probe follows the path of the comet. To have an older example, think of the Voyagers probes (1977) that carry the gold records organized by Carl Sagan and his team. In addition to scientific research, the space probe carries images, sounds from the Earth, artistic works that traverse the borders of our solar system and tell things about Earth in Space. Voyager data is still being transmitted to Earth today. Many other artworks have been created throughout the history of satellites, some more symbolic, others more structural, in any case, it is always a challenge to think of an artistic satellite. This trip is far from over, it is just beginning, so it still has an experimental, critical, and poetic character, at the same time, fulfills its role of education and scientific dissemination.
ARTSAT MISSION
Each satellite has a mission. An ArtSat also has. In addition to the requirements of space engineering, ArtSat's missions add content that concerns imaginary, poetic, symbolic, fictional, speculative dimensions, which have the power to affect sensibilities and futures. Just as science fiction shaped various perspectives for the future during the 20th century, it has the power to propose new plots for the 21st century, but for that, it needs many more people involved. We are interested in open spaces for the creation of satellites whose mission is driven by artistic, educational, afrofuturistic, ecological, indigenous, archaeoastronomy, organic proposals, that means, we want to enhance the creation of satellites that do not yet exist, which have not even been thought of yet. ArtSats are technical devices whose aesthetic freedom promotes other paradigms and challenges for space engineering. Anyone who read Octavia E. Butler (African American science fiction writer) possibly remember her organic spaceships, created from the DNA of plants and biological systems. It is the challenge that her science fiction has launched for lovers of Space Culture. An ArtSat's mission is related to the use it gives to the payload, but also to its materiality, to the nature of its components.
OPPORTUNITY
In July 2021, 3º CubeDesign will take place at INPE, a small satellite competition that has been held annually since 2018, whose categories are CubeSat, CanSat, Mockup, DataScience. ArtSat will enter as a category for the first time. We hope that the participants of the 1st ARTSAT WORKSHOP AT INPE can learn to create, manage, promote their nanosatellites and be able to participate in this competition.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This event is dedicated to Artists and people interested in art and space science - over 18 years.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Registrants will have the possibility to learn how to build an ArtSat, from a technical mission and an artistic mission. There will be practical and theoretical classes. ArtSat will obey a set of rules established by the CubeSat standard.
The Course is divided into two stages: The First stage is technical, satellite engineering classes, nanosatellite construction - Cubesat type. The second stage is conceptual, theoretical with Round Tables with people experienced in the field of satellites and art and science.
