Brazil in 2010, represented by National Institute for Space Research (INPE), will be in the chair of the Committee Earth Observation Satellite (CEOS), which gathers 28 space agencies and 20 national and international organizations. Founded in 1984, CEOS is responsible for the space civilian programme global coordination and by the Earth Observation satellite data interchange for the society benefit.
Gilberto Câmara, as INPE’s executive director, was officially announced as CEOS president for the year 2010 in the closing of the 23rd CEOS Plenary Meeting, held on Phuket, Thailand, 3-5 November.
CEOS presidency reinforce Brazil’s image in the worldwide context as a leader of satellite data use dissemination, due to its pioneering with CBERS’ free access policy in 2004.
The satellite data interchange provided by CEOS joins efforts and allows getting more information about deforestation, natural disasters forecast, biodiversity conservation studies, among other important issues in the present climate change sceneries. The more satellite and data available, the better will be our planet natural resources managing.
