Brazil to share experiences of environmental monitoring during international event

Monday, November 19, 2012

Geotechnologies like satellites are useful in monitoring crops, water resources, natural disasters and in registering properties, besides other applications. In Foz do Iguaçu (PR), on Tuesday (11/20), representatives of Brazilian institutions will be meeting to exchange experiences and build partnerships based on the use of space technologies and Earth observation data.

The National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE), the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), the National Water Agency (ANA), the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), National Supply Company (Conab) and the University of Alagoas (UFAL) are among institutions that participate in the GEO Brazil, event related to the Plenary Meeting of the Intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO), held at Mabu Thermas & Resort.

INPE will present the use of satellite images to monitor crops, map the area available for harvest and identify the land used for agriculture. The experience in using geotechnology for agricultural monitoring will be also addressed by Conab while Embrapa will show the ability to track changes in coverage and land use. ANA will present its national system for water resources monitoring and SFB, the applications of Earth observation technology in forestry. On the other hand, UFAL will address the use of data in the context of natural disasters.

During the GEO Brazil, the GEOGLAM (Global Agriculture Monitoring) will also be presented. It is a GEO initiative to improve information on grain production worldwide.

GEO

Bringing together 88 countries, the European Commission and 61 international organizations, GEO manage actions aimed at monitoring the Earth and discuss offering free data and sharing information that can contribute to the welfare of humankind and preserving the planet.

For the first time in Brazil, the GEO Plenary will assess the implementation of a global system for detailed observations of the planet. Due to GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) it will be able to gather in the same place data on oceans, forests, biodiversity and urban development, among others.

About 350 representatives from different countries and institutions will be attending the plenary on November 22 and 23. Between November 19 and 21, preparatory meetings and side events will take place, such as the GEO Brazil, on Tuesday (20).
