During the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009, or COP15, realized in Copenhagen, Denmark, the National Institute for Space Research – INPE and the Food and Agriculture Organization – FAO signed a Memorandum of Understanding aiming to cooperate in the promotion and realization of capacity building activities for developing countries.

These capacity buildings would focus on the development of tools for land monitoring, especially forest monitoring. Other objectives include activities to build technical expertise in developing countries and to help these countries to become autonomous in their forest monitoring.

This intensive training programme will be open to all REDD+ countries interested, almost 30 to 40 countries, and five persons from each country will be financially supported by FAO to take the training.

The trainings will take place at the National Institute for Space Research, in their Amazon Regional Center located in the city of Belém, Brazil. During the course, participants will be presented to INPE projects and also will be training to operate TerraAmazon system.

By the end of the training, INPE and FAO will be responsible for the in-country implementation and operationalization of the forest monitoring system, and also prepare to make any kind of adaptation to the national circumstances.
